Let’s be honest: mattresses can be expensive. Buying a new mattress is definitely a long-term investment, and like all investments, if you don’t do your research beforehand, you’re risking a loss!
Here at ComfortStyle, we’ve been in the bedding industry for many years and we’ve seen all too many people come to us after shopping around at other stores and complaining that they’ve wasted hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars during the mattress-buying process.
We don’t want anyone to be losing sleep over mattress-mistakes so we’ve decided to break down the top mattress buying mistakes that we see happen all too often. Let’s discuss.
1. Buying without trying
In the past few years, online shopping has skyrocketed. Buying online is so quick, easy, and you can do it while wearing pyjamas – what’s not to love! However, there are some things we don’t recommend you shop online for, and that’s mattresses.
Comfort is 100% subjective. You may see reviews online that say a mattress is comfy and fantastic, click ‘add to cart’, get it delivered, lay down, and realise those reviews’ definition of comfy does not match your own. Uh-oh, now you have to pay for courier returns, and fork out for another mattress. Sigh.
This is the danger of buying without trying first. Dedicate a little time to visiting a store that carries the mattress you have your eye on and lay down on it. Be sure to lay down vertically, as you would when you’re ready to go to sleep, laying horizontally won’t give you an accurate feel for how the bed will actually be in action.
Be sure to also lay on the bed exactly as you do at bedtime! If you’re a stomach sleeper, get on your tummy and get comfy, if you’re a side sleeper, roll over and get a good feel for it. Don’t feel silly spending a while on each mattress, that’s what the showrooms are for!
Once you’ve found The One, buying online is no longer a problem as you know exactly what will arrive to your front door!
2. Opting for a cheap mattress over a quality mattress
You know that old adage “you get what you pay for”? Yep, this is very true for mattresses.
Of course, everyone has a different budget when it comes to purchasing mattresses, but you should always prioritize quality over price tag. Most of these cheap mattresses don’t last long, and in no time at all, you’ll be back looking for a new mattress, and bam! more money down the drain.
Despite what your wallet may want, if you’re able to, don’t go for the cheapest mattress in the room. That $50 mattress could save you in the short term but could possibly make you develop backaches and pains that’ll cost you a pretty penny in medical expenses down the line.
Think of your mattress as an investment for the next 6-7 years. If you split the cost up over that timeframe, it doesn’t hurt as bad to fork out for.
If your budget is really tight, don’t forget that here at ComfortStyle we offer layby options, Zip Pay, and other financial programs to help you spread out your payments over time. We’re here to help!
3. Not using a mattress protector
It may seem like an added expense at the time but getting yourself a mattress protector can really be worth its weight in gold in the long run!
Mattress protectors are often waterproof, antimicrobial, and help protect your new investment from day-to-day wear and tear. A quality mattress protector can help extend the life of your mattress significantly and is well worth consideration when shopping for a new mattress!
Looking for an affordable protector that has all the bells and whistles? Check out the Zeek Bamboo Mattress Protector. It’s super soft, cushy, and does a top-notch job every night without fail.
4. More layers do not equal more comfort
Even the princess in the Princess and the Pea fairytale knows this to be true. Mattresses that come with several layers are said to be more comfortable than those with fewer layers, but this isn’t always true. What’s more? These densely layered mattresses are far more expensive than other mattresses.
Densley layered mattresses are often full of gimmick-y “technologies” to the point where you’re mostly buying layers of marketing rather than layers of comfort. No thanks!
Take time out to find out what mattress best suits your needs before making a purchase. Don’t spend so much money getting one of these heavily layered mattresses only to discover that it isn’t as comfortable as it’s meant to be. You’d have lost your money and still need a right mattress. Again, no thanks!
5. Not pairing your mattress with the right pillow
It’s not all about the mattress. Sometimes, your neck pain could be as a result of the pillow you’re using. You could have a great mattress but it can all be moot if your pillow ain’t doing its job.
Certain pillows have certain heights, shapes, levels of support, etc. depending on what your needs are. If you’re experiencing neck and shoulder pain in the morning even after getting a quality mattress, take a look at the pillow/s you’re using.
So before you race off to replace your mattress and fork out hundreds, consider replacing your old pillows with a quality memory foam pillow. Shop our Zeek range for affordable options!
Take some time to speak to a bedding expert (not to brag, but our experts at ComfortStyle really know their stuff) and see if a switch-up in pillows can help solve your dilemmas in a much more budget-friendly way.
